About this postcard
Kirkjufell — Church Mountain — stands at the tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula on Iceland's west coast, rising steeply from the shore of Grundarfjörður fjord. At 463 metres, it is not Iceland's tallest mountain, but its near-perfect conical shape and isolated position make it among the most distinctive. It has appeared in several major film and television productions.
The small waterfall in the foreground, Kirkjufellsfoss, is where most photographers position themselves — the falls in the lower frame, the mountain filling the sky behind. The relationship between the two makes the composition: the water moving, the mountain still. This postcard was taken in golden-hour light, when the peak catches the last of the sun. Sent from Iceland with a genuine Icelandic stamp.
