About this postcard

Svartifoss — the Black Falls — sits in the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park. What makes it unique is the amphitheatre of dark basalt columns that frame it on three sides: hexagonal formations created by slow, even cooling of ancient lava, the same geological process that produced Iceland's coastline cliffs.

The waterfall itself is not the tallest in Iceland, but the setting is unlike anything else. The columns create a near-perfect geometric frame — dark, precise, slightly forbidding — for the white water falling through the centre of it. Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík was partly inspired by this view.
