Jökulsárlón is one of the best places in Iceland to photograph the aurora — the open lagoon provides an unobstructed view of the sky, and the icebergs catch and reflect the light from below, turning the scene into something with no clear boundary between sky and water.

The aurora borealis is caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, producing the curtains of green, purple, and white light that appear in Iceland's skies between September and March. The best conditions require clear skies, darkness, and solar activity — all three came together for this photograph.
