About this postcard

Hveravellir is an oasis of geothermal activity in Iceland's remote interior highlands, accessible only in summer by four-wheel drive. Its hot springs get their colour from dissolved silica and minerals that interact with light differently at different temperatures — producing the vivid turquoise and blue shades visible here.

This photograph was taken at golden hour — the low sun catching the steam rising from the water and turning the sky behind it amber and gold. The contrast between the cool blue of the pool and the warm light above it is what makes the image. Sent from Iceland with a genuine Icelandic stamp.
