Iceland's geothermal springs get their colour from the minerals dissolved in the water — silica, sulphur, and various salts that interact with light differently at different temperatures. The vivid turquoise and blue shades appear when the water is very hot and very clear, and the silica content is high. The same process creates the Blue Lagoon's famous colour, here seen in a more remote and less visited context.

This photograph was taken at golden hour — the low sun catching the steam rising from the water and turning the sky behind it amber and gold. The contrast between the cool blue of the pool and the warm light above it is what makes the image. Geothermal activity is visible across Iceland, but shots like this — where the colour is this vivid, the light this specific — require time and luck.
