About this postcard
Hallgrímskirkja is the tallest building in Iceland and the dominant feature of Reykjavík's skyline. Its stepped concrete facade is modelled on the basalt columns formed by cooling lava flows — the same volcanic geometry that appears throughout the Icelandic landscape, here translated into a place of worship. The building took over 40 years to complete.
In front of it stands Leifur Eiríksson, the Norse explorer who reached North America around 1000 AD — 500 years before Columbus. The statue was a gift from the United States in 1930, marking the thousandth anniversary of the Althing. It faces west, toward Vínland. This postcard frames both — the statue and the church — from below, as most visitors see them.
Every Postcard.is design is a real image from Iceland — a place whose landscapes
range from glaciers and waterfalls to volcanic deserts and midnight-sun coastlines.
