About this postcard
The icebergs at Jökulsárlón are old. The ice they are made from may have accumulated as snowfall hundreds or thousands of years ago, compressed over time into the dense, air-free ice that turns deep blue when light passes through it. The blue is real — it is what glacial ice looks like when the air has been squeezed out over centuries.
The lagoon is fed by calving from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which has been retreating steadily, producing more and larger icebergs as the ice face recedes. Seals haul themselves onto the ice and drift with it. The icebergs make their way slowly to the sea, some beaching on the black sand of Diamond Beach nearby.
