About this postcard

Hvítserkur is a volcanic rock formation on the eastern shore of the Vatnsnes peninsula in northwest Iceland. It rises about 15 metres from the water, with two natural arches at its base that give it the silhouette of a drinking dinosaur or a two-legged creature. The name means 'white shirt' — a reference to the guano from the nesting birds that coat the upper surfaces.

At high tide, the rock is completely surrounded by water. At low tide, you can walk out to it across the exposed flats. This postcard was photographed in calm conditions, when the surrounding water goes mirror-still and the rock doubles in the reflection. The blue tones are real — this is how this part of Iceland looks in the late evening light. Sent with a genuine Icelandic stamp.
