About this postcard
The aurora borealis is Iceland's most searched-for natural spectacle. Between September and March, when nights are long and the sky is clear, the lights can appear without warning and fill the horizon — curtains of green, purple, and white light that seem to move with intent. They are caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with gases in Earth's atmosphere, and no photograph fully captures the movement. But the stillness of a photograph captures something else: the sense of standing under something vast and indifferent and extraordinary.
This postcard places the aurora above a traditional Icelandic turf house — one of those low, grass-roofed buildings that blends into the hillside. It's an image of Iceland before electricity, before light pollution, when the northern lights were a nightly companion rather than something you chased.
