Jökulsárlón formed as the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreated through the 20th century, exposing an expanding lake where icebergs now calve and drift slowly toward the sea. The lake is Iceland's deepest, over 200 metres in places, and the icebergs — ranging from brilliant white to deep compressed blue — can take years to make their journey from glacier face to ocean.

Just outside the lagoon, Diamond Beach catches the smaller ice pieces that wash up on the black sand shore, catching light like glass against the dark volcanic sand. It's the kind of contrast — radiant white and blue ice on pure black — that stops people in their tracks.
